The Raleigh Mobs |
We are informed by the best
authority, that the charge in the Raleigh Progress of Gen. Benning being
privy to the sacking of the Standard office is a base falsehood, as that
gentleman was sleeping when the act took place. We are also informed
that the sacking was not committed by Georgia, but by North Carolina
troops, who were on their way with Benning's brigade to arrest
deserters. These men first proposed to sack the office, and succeeded in
seducing the Georgians to join them. We have this statement from the
very highest official authority, and would call the attention of North
Carolinians to it. |
