The Vicksburg Whig
learns that the Confederates one day last week rescued the New Orleans,
Opelousas & Great Northern Railroad from the enemy, taking several
officers and privates prisoners and destroying all the bridges on the
road. Two trains were taken near Brashear City and the Federals on board
captured. Our men then ran one of the trains out near Algiers and cut
the levee to prevent the enemy from getting out; but they soon repaired
it, when the bridges were destroyed as before stated. If the bridges
over Bayous Lafourche, Des Allemands, Lean Blue, Terrebonne, Cow Tiger
and others were burned, the Opelousas road will be of no service to the
enemy for a long time. |
