The completion of the Texas & New
Orleans road would attach us to the Confederate States, and enable us
to let the people there know all the time that Texas is a part of the
country. As it is they hear from us so rarely and the news is so long
going that they forget all about us between times. "How far is
Houston beyond El Paso" enquired an innocent official in
Richmond. "It depends on whether you go by San Francisco or New
Orleans, you have a choice of routes," was the Texian's reply. |
