Honorably Discharged |
|
Mr. Samuel Ruth,
Superintendent of the Fredericksburg Railroad Company {Richmond,
Fredericksburg & Potomac RR}, arrested by the
detectives ten days ago on the charge of conveying information to the
enemy, and since confined to Castle Thunder, was on yesterday, after
examination before Confederate Commissioner Baxter, honorably
discharged. There was not the slightest shadow of evidence against
him, and the person brought down from King George County to testify
against him, and whose evidence was chiefly relied upon to fasten the
charge upon him, had never seen or heard of him in his life. It is
outrageous that a respectable citizen should be seized and thrown into
that abominable hole, Castle Thunder, upon no better ground than a malicious
whisper. The charge against Ruth was trumped up by some of the
creatures along the line of the Fredericksburg road, whose title to
free transportation he would never recognize. |
