Mr. Merrimon from the committee on
internal improvements, reported a bill in favor of authorizing the
transfer of coupon bonds by the Treasurer to the amount of $200,000,
to the Western Railroad Company, to complete said Railroad to the
Coalfields at an early day. |
Mr. Wright presented a letter from Hon.
Mr. Mallory, Secretary of the Navy of the Confederate States, urging
its early completion, which at his request, was read. [See letter in
another column.] Mr. Person urged the passage of the bill because of
the absolute importance of a supply of coal for our steam navy,
machine and work-shops, as well as to supply the general want. Mr.
Ferebee knew that the coal was greatly needed at our machine shops,
and he was cognizant of the fact that 130 tons of coal were now needed
to carry on very important operations in which the government was
interested. The bill passed by a large vote -- yeas 83, nays 14. It
was ordered to be engrossed and sent to the Senate. |
