The Chatham Railroad |
At a meeting of the Commissioners of
Raleigh, held on Wednesday night, Mr. Richardson, one of the
Commissioners, in the Western Ward, offered the following: |
Be it Ordained, That a poll be
opened in the City of Raleigh on Monday the 15th day of April next, at
which time the qualified voters of the City be requested to vote for
or against an appropriation to the Chatham and Coalfields Railroad
Company to the amount of $30,000. The said subscription to be made by
the issue of the coupon bonds of the City of Raleigh, bearing interest
at a rate not exceeding 6 per cent. per annum. The amount of bonds
issued shall be sufficient to cover the above subscription of $30,000,
with such an additional amount as will pay the interest on said
subscription until an amendment can be made to the present charter of
the City, by which a sufficient amount can be raised by taxation and
to create a sinking fund looking to the ultimate redemption of the
principle. |
Should the voters of the City decide to
make the above subscription, the Mayor shall advertise for sealed
proposals, to be opened in the City of Raleigh at such time as he may
deem best, for the above bonds; said proposals to be opened and
awarded in presence of a majority of the City Commissioners. |
The matter was referred to the City
Attorney, K. P. Battle, Esq., for a legal opinion, and made the
special order for a called meeting at some future time. |
If our City, under its charter, has
authority to make the proposed subscription, we doubt not it will be
made. The proposed road is an important one to Raleigh, and our
citizens should bestir themselves. We shall anxiously await the
opinion of the City Attorney, and implicitly rely upon it. |
