Legislature of North Carolina
Senate
Monday, Feb. 6, 1865
   Prayer by Rev. Dr. Mason.
The joint select committee to which was referred a communication from the Secretary of War, in regard to altering the guage of the Piedmont road, reported a bill in favor of the alteration.
Mr. Patterson moved to suspend the rule and put the bill upon its several readings. After discussion, by Messrs. Courts and others in favor of the bill, and Messrs. Arendell and others in opposition, the motion to suspend was agreed to -- Yeas 31, nays 11.
Mr. Hall offered an amendment providing that the Legislature should have power, at the end of the war, to revoke the permission given to widen the road, and that the Company should be compelled to restore the present guage, if required to do so. Adopted -- yeas 28, nays 14.
The bill then passed its second and third readings.
