The joint select committee to which was
referred a communication from the Secretary of War, in regard to
altering the guage of the Piedmont road, reported a bill in favor of
the alteration. |
Mr. Patterson moved to suspend the rule
and put the bill upon its several readings. After discussion, by
Messrs. Courts and others in favor of the bill, and Messrs. Arendell
and others in opposition, the motion to suspend was agreed to -- Yeas
31, nays 11. |
Mr. Hall offered an amendment providing
that the Legislature should have power, at the end of the war, to
revoke the permission given to widen the road, and that the Company
should be compelled to restore the present guage, if required to do
so. Adopted -- yeas 28, nays 14. |
The bill then passed its second and third
readings. |
