The Danville Connection |
It will be seen that President Davis, in
his message, recommends that the Confederate government shall give aid
in constructing the "Danville connection," as it is called,
so as to have another through route for the transportation of troops,
&c. While we do not concede to the Confederate government the
right to engage in works of internal improvement in the States, we are
nevertheless gratified that the President's attention has been
directed to this important work. It ought to be commenced and
completed, and that speedily; and there ought to be a connection
between the Railroads of this State and the coal and iron region in
Chatham. |
By the way, there is no charter in
existence for a straight line of Road from Greensborough to Danville {eventually
the Piedmont RR}, but there is a charger for the former to the
latter point, via Leaksville, which is said to be about
twenty-five miles out of the way. There is another charter, however,
from Bark-dale Ferry, near Danville, to the Company Shops {the
the Milton & Yanceyville RR}, in Alamance, which, it is
said, provides for a straight line. |
