The Accident on the Petersburg Railroad |
It appears that five men were more or less
injured by the accident at Swift Creek bridge, on the Richmond &
Petersburg railroad, on Sunday evening, namely, Edward Stanley,
engineer, seriously wounded under the chin and on the right leg;
Dennis Heffron, Co. K, 12th Virginia regiment, slightly in the hand;
Jim, slave of Edward Stanley, seriously in the head; John Jackson,
free-negro, right leg broken; Mallory, free negro, slightly in the
left leg. It is considered that their escape from instant death was
miraculous. The morning train, with the mails and passengers, came in
yesterday in good time. Until the bridge is repaired, trains will run
from either terminus of the road to Swift Creek, and the interruption
to travel is comparatively slight. With a proper display of energy,
the operations on the road may be fully resumed in the course of a few
days. |
