The Raiders in East Tennessee {East
Tennessee & Virginia RR} |
Notwithstanding the confident tone of the
dispatches from Knoxville of the anticipated capture of these bridge
burners and plunderers, we very much fear they will succeed in
escaping. Indeed, passengers from the West yesterday reported that
they had already gotten out of reach of pursuit, and that our forces
are returning. |
We are gratified to state that prompt
measures are being put in operation to repair the injuries done to the
railroad, and a large force will be immediately set to work. We
understand it is probable that mail and passengers from Knoxville will
come through this evening. |
The Atlanta Appeal says: |
The depredations of the Federals at
Lenoir's mills were not, as we have information privately, as
extensive as first reported. The depot and the bridge above were
destroyed. The marauders were, it is said, so badly frightened, that
they left in a hurry, without doing any injury to the factory
buildings. |
