The Petersburg Express mentions the
burning on Monday last, of a portion of the workshops at Mount Airy,
belonging to the Petersburg Railroad Company. The flames originated in
that portion of the coach factory lying nearest the city, and spread
so rapidly, fanned as they were by a brisk breeze that prevailed at
the time, that all efforts to stop their progress were futile, and the
entire factory, covering a space of between one and two hundred feet,
was consumed. |
The house or houses destroyed were wooden
buildings, but the estimated loss by the fire is between $12,000 and
$16,000, which, we understand, is but partially covered by insurance. |
