Orange & Alexandria Railroad Company |
The stockholders of the above company met
at Lynchburg, on the 24th of October. The annual report exhibited a
very prosperous state of the finances. The net earnings of the road,
during the last year, were upwards of a million of dollars; the
expenses, during the same period, were about seven hundred thousand
dollars. No dividend was declared. The earnings were directed to be
employed in paying the debts of the company, so far as practicable,
the surplus to be invested for the benefit of the company. |
The old officers were re-elected, and
Daniel F. Slaughter, Esq., was elected an additional director on the
part of the company. Messrs John G. Meam, Richard Cunningham and Lewis
B. Wilhams are the directors on the part of the State. |
A resolution was adopted, approving the
action of the Board in not employing in the sdervice of the company
any persons otherwise liable to military duty, where their places can
be filled by non-conscripts. |
