In our advertising columns will be found a
notice to its employees of the President of the Virginia Central
railroad. The employees of a railroad hold the lives of thousands in
their hands, and should be held responsible for accidents caused by
their negligence. How often, lately, has the public been shocked by
"accidents" to trains loaded with troops, by which our brave
soldiers, after escaping a thousand dangers on the battle field, are
maimed and killed through the recklessness of some railroad employee.
Accidents have been numerous on the Central Road; and if the President
of the Company can diminish the number and insure the safety of their
passengers, the traveling public will be under many obligations to
him, without inquiring particularly into the means, however severe,
adopted, provided no injustice is to be done to the humblest man in
their employment. |
