Charles Talcott, Esq., superintendent of
the {Richmond &} Danville railroad,
was offered by Senator Gwynn, now Duke of Sonora, fifty thousand
dollars a year in gold if he would place his engineering skill at the
disposal of the Emperor of Mexico. A passport and the funds for paying
the passage of himself and family, accompanied this munificent offer
to Mr. Talcott. He declined, on the ground that he was unwilling to
desert his country in the time of trial. |
