Railroad Accident |
A land-slide occurred at the
"deep cut," six miles this side of Salisbury, on the W. Railroad
{Western North Carolina RR}, Monday night
of last week {March 24, 1862}. As the train
was proceeding westwardly the next morning the obstruction, which was in
an abrupt turn of the road, was observed too late for the engineer to
stop the train, and a severe concussion ensued. The locomotive and
several cars were much damaged, and a soldier by the name of James
Briggs, of Rowan, a member of Capt. Wood's company, was killed. He was
standing on the platform. The other passengers were severely jolted,
some of them injured |
