The Third regiment of South
Carolina volunteers, Col. Williams commanding, arrived in this city on
Tuesday evening. It numbers 950 stalwart, chivalrous men, from the
interior portion of the State, and will soon be followed, we are
informed, by two additional regiments, the 11th and 7th. We regretted to
learn that two of its members were killed on the route, one at Columbia,
S. C., in attempting to get on the train whilst it was in rapid motion.
The other recklessly endangered his life by ascending to the top of a
car and going to sleep. Soon after which the train passed over a bridge,
and his head coming in collision with the roof, he was instantly killed. |

on the Charlotte & South Carolina RR} |
