The railroads of the
Confederacy are paying institutions in this war; even those which have
been most cut up and injured by the enemy. From the last report of the
Virginia Central road we notice that its revenue for the past fiscal
year was one million of dollars, and its expenses not quite $372,000.
The total liabilities on the 1st of October was $1,357,198. This road
during the year has been greatly injured by the enemy. The report of the
President, in view of the difficulty of getting iron, &c., thinks that
by judicious management, the iron on this road will last many years
longer. In order to save it as much as possible, the speed of the trains
has been very much lessened. |
