Manufacturing Enterprises in Richmond |
Among the manufacturing
enterprises lately commenced in Richmond, is a factory for making glue,
machine oil, and grease for the axles of railroad cars. This factory,
which is owned by Mr. Henry J. Maigne, is situated in the rear of the
new Poor House, on the upper end of Second street. It is the first
attempt to manufacture glue in the South, which article is now
excessively scarce and dear. The oil is manufactured from tallow by a
new process, which is the secret of the inventor, and specimens we have
seen seem to answer in all respects the purpose of the best and cleanest
machine oil. The grease for car axles is the same oil, in a thicker
condition. The manufacturer's price of the oil is $1.75 per gallon. With
the present facilities about six hundred gallons are made per day. Mr.
Maigne has already a contract with the {Richmond
&} Danville road for supplies of car grease; and his enterprise
promises to be a timely and profitable one, considering the present
great scarcity of oils for lubricating purposes. |
