It may be as well to inform the Government
that, notwithstanding a full fortnight has elapsed since the evacuation
of Stafford, not a bar of iron ha been removed from the railway track on
the Aquia Creek read, and the bridges and fortifications are all intact.
A few kegs of gunpowder, and a few hundred men could in a very short
time demolish what has cost Hooker's host many a month of weary work,
save to the Government hundreds of tons of priceless railway material,
and utterly prevent this place from being used as a point of defense,
debarkation or a permanent base for any force from Dix's department. |
{This is regarding removing the
RR track from Fredericksburg to Aquia Creek, part of the Richmond,
Fredericksburg & Potomac RR, about 10 miles. It appears that no work had
been done, despite the statement in Richmond Sentinel of 6/24/63.
Action got underway after an Engineer Officer visited the location on
July 14.} |
