To the Editors of the Enquirer: |
|
Gentlemen, |
Allow me to notice an error in
your this morning's issue in regard to the capture of the locomotives
"President" and "Red Bird," by Stuart's cavalry in
August last. They were captured by the First Louisiana Brigade,
commanded by Col. Forno, of the Fifth Louisiana, which Brigade had led
the van of our advancing columns from the Rappahannock. |
When within three miles of
Bristoe Station, General Jackson having learned that two trains were
to arrive there, they were double-quicked to that station, where they
were drawn up to receive them, expecting that they contained troops.
The trains arriving, entirely unsuspicious of danger, they were
surrounded and captured. |
The next day the Brigade
successfully resisted the advance of three times their number of
Yankees, until General Jackson had reached Manassas with the rest of
his corps. |
