Lynchburg, Va., August 19 |
A few days ago, Col. R. L.
Owen, President of the Virginia & Tennessee Railroad,
gave orders that all employees on that road should be required to take
the oath of allegiance to the Southern Confederacy. Every officer and
employee took the oath except two, who were discharged. This example
could do no great harm if followed by other railroad
Presidents, as it serves to make every one show his colors. The two
who refused to take the oath claimed allegiance to European powers. |
