Fire |
The large Government building,
within the Navy-Yard inclosure, occupied by the Memphis & Ohio Railroad
Company as a Superintendent's office, telegraph office, and ticket
office, was discovered to be on fire in the roof about 3 o'clock
yesterday morning. The alarm was given, and the firemen were on the
ground with little delay, and finally arrested the flames after they
reached the second story. The books and papers in the Superintendent's
and the telegraph office were either consumed or seriously injured.
The safes were saved unhurt. The damage to the building could [probably]
be repaired for $1,000. The building was insured for $15,000 in three
home offices by Mayor Baugh, just before his term of office expired.
The general impression appears to be that the building was set on fire
in the garret. The house was elegantly built, and must have cost
$40,000. |
