Accident to a prisoner |
On Saturdaymorning last 498 Yankees left
the Libby prison for City Point. Near the place of landing at City
Point there is a heavy grade of the {South Side}
railroad, and it is the custom to detach the locomotive
and allow the cars to run down the grade. When the locomotive
was detached on Saturdaymorning, the prisoners became alarmed, and a
number of them jumped from the cars. One of them fell upon the track,
and his leg was so lacerated by the cars passing over it that
amputation was found necessary. This was performed on board of the
flag of truce boat by Dr. Hewett, a Yankee surgeon, who had been
released with the party sent off. |
