The accident on the {Richmond
&} Danville Railroad |
By the accident which occurred at the
Staunton bridge, on the Danville road, Wednesdaymorning, nine soldiers
were killed and several others wounded. Against the remonstrances of
the Agent of the road, who warned them of the probability of a train
of cars coming on at any hour of the day or night, the guard at the
bridge placed a cannon on a pole car for the purpose of transferring
it to the other side, but failing to take it entirely across, the down
freight train came in collision with it, when the locomotive
and several of the cars were piled upon each other, causing the sad
loss of life alluded to, as well as serious damage to the bridge and
the destruction of several cars. In a few days trains will again
commence carrying freight through, as a train will leave the west end
of the bridge every other day for that purpose. |
