Petersburg, April 10, 1861 |
I learn today, that about 150
feet of the City Point Railroad {the
eastern part of the South Side RR} had been undermined
and washed away by the flood, at City Point; and, moreover, that the
company are in hourly expectation of still greater loss. It will
require several days to repair the loss that has already been
sustained, |
I understand, from
headquarters, that the Richmond
& Petersburg Railroad Company have finally
made definite arrangements to cross the Appomattox. This news will be hailed with much satisfaction by our citizens and
the public generally. Their present depot is in a most inconvenient
situation, and persons traveling over the road have to brave a great
deal that is unpleasant, both in winter and summer, in order to reach
it. They intend building a strong iron bridge over the river, to the
foot of 2d street, and proceeding thence up the stream enter the South-Side lot, which
they will enlarge and share with that company. The work will be
commenced very soon. |
