Meridian, March 4 |
The work of repairing the
railroads destroyed by the enemy is progressing rapidly. Three miles
of track and three bridges were destroyed on the Southern {of
Mississippi} road, ten
miles of track on the Selma
road {the Northeast & Southwest Alabama RR}, and thirty-five miles of track on the
Mobile
& Ohio
road. |
Sherman
burned a great deal of property here, and at Marion, Enterprise, Lockhart, and Lauderdale
Stations {all on the Mobile & Ohio RR}. All the public buildings at this
place were destroyed, and a number of private houses. The Barton
House, Ragsdale House, and railroad depots
were burned, as also the office of the Daily Clarion. The enemy
pillaged every house, carrying off everything of any value. |
