Test of transportation |
In peace times a barrel and its contents,
of the usual weight could be brought from Norfolk to Richmond for
twenty five cents. Now one dollar and fifty cents is demanded by the
railroad to bring a barrel from the White House to Richmond. These
rates operate to swell the price of various articles of food brought
from the lower country. Oysters, which now command from $5 to $6 per
gallon, would be sold by the venders at half these prices and money be
made, could they get transportation at
reasonable rates. |
