Fatal locomotive explosion |
The engine "E. Fontaine,"
running on the {Virginia} Central
railroad, exploded about half-past 9 o'clock on yesterday morning at
Wickham's turnout, in Hanover county, killing instantly James Ramsey,
the engineer, and seriously injuring a negro boy who was in the act of
getting on the train. The explosion was of the most violent character,
causing a report which was heard for miles around and scattering
fragments of the boiler in every direction. The bell was thrown to a
distance of a quarter of a mile. The deceased engineer's body was
brought to this city on yesterday afternoon, and presented a ghastly
spectacle, with a part of his heart protruding from his breast and his
head crushed in. He was unmarried, and originally hailed from Indiana,
though for a number of years back he has resided in the South. |
