Railroad accident |
A collision occurred last
Saturday, about one o'clock, some two or three miles above Bumpas's
turnout, on the Virginia Central Railroad. The down freight train,
Instead of waiting for the mail train to come, (the latter being
somewhat behind time.) proceeded on to a water station, where the
engine was detached, leaving the cars on the main track. The mail
train shortly afterwards came around a curve, and run into the freight
cars, and the concussion was so powerful as to throw the locomotive
off the track. J. R. Horton, the engineer, was considerably
injured, but the fireman leaped off and was unhurt. The locomotive
and two of the cars were much damaged. This is the extent of the
casualty so far as we are informed. The ??? and passenger train due
here Saturdayafternoon, did not arrive until Sundaymorning at 4
o'clock, in consequence of the accident. |
