Richmond Markets, Jan. 23, 1862 |
There is nothing new of a commercial
nature to notice. Quotations refer mainly to a very limited trade in
almost every branch of business. The retail trade continues
exceedingly animated. The leading articles in the grocery line are
very scarce and high. Salt has reached fabulous rater. Those articles,
such as sugar, which are produced in sufficient quantity for the
consumption of the Southern Confederacy, and are nevertheless very
high, are enhanced by the cost of transportation by railroad.
That medium is so much occupied by the transportation of army stores
and troops that it is difficult to obtain transportation for the
trade. |
