Baggage Car Burned |
The baggage car on the {Richmond
&} Danville
road was burned on Saturday morning, 23d inst. The car contained the
deposits of the three banks of Stanton, sent to Danville for safe
keeping, when the former place was threatened by Hunter. The gold and
silver belonging to these banks amounted to more than $350,000. All of
the precious mental that was recovered was melted and reduced to crude
lumps of gold and silver. |
The government messenger of
the Southern Express Company was on the car with $20,000 in gold, and
more than half a million in Confederate Treasury notes. As soon as the
alarm of fire was given, he threw his box from the car and followed
it. He lost nothing. The Express company losses on freight and
packages are about $35,000. The railroad company will lose {$}100,000
on the baggage of passengers lost, for which the passengers held
checks. |
