Passengers by the western train tonight,
report a raid on the Virginia & Tennessee road at Bristol. The
enemy, supposed to be a portion of Burbridge's command from Beam'
Station, advanced rapidly and entered the town at five o'clock this
morning, and destroyed a considerable quantity of Government stores.
An engine and train on the East Tennessee & {Virginia
RR} {a line was evidently missed by the typesetter} Eastern
bound passenger train on the Virginia & Tennessee road was
captured between Bristol and Abingdon. No positive intelligence of the
enemy's numbers, but supposed to be five or six thousand, a portion of
whom are said yet to occupy the place. A body of the enemy returning
towards Beam's Station, encountered our forces, at Zollicoffer, a
station on East Tennessee road, 9 miles west of Bristol, where a fight
was said to be progressing at last accounts. |
