| Railroad Accident |
| Yesterday
afternoon, at half-past 1 o'clock, as one of the down trains of the
Mexican Gulf Railroad was passing opposite the Barracks, a German
soldier of the Gulf Guard, attached to the Chalmette Regiment, who was
leisurely sitting on the guard platform, lost his balance and fell down
between the car wheels, with his right foot on the rail. Ere the train
could be stopped, all the wheels of the train had passed over his foot,
and crushed it in the most frightful manner. When picked up he had not
lost his senses, and had strength enough to give all the necessary
information about his family. He was immediately brought to this
residence, on Goodchildren street, No. 536. His wife was at the time
sitting by her door, talking with her friends; she had parted with him a
while before, when he left to join his company at Camp Chalmette.
Imagine her grief when she saw him returning so soon, a cripple for
life. |
