New Orleans & Texas Railroad
The necessity of direct railroad communication with Texas has long been an universally admitted ???. The last Legislature so regarded it, and firmly met the wishes of our people by chartering a Railroad Company with the above title. Last evening the corporators, specified in the charter, held a meeting at the St. Charles Hotel, and organization was had by calling L. F. Generes, Esq., to the chair, and appointing Mr. L. H. Place, Secretary. Able and pertinent addresses were delivered by Col. A. M. Gentry {President, Texas & New Orleans RR}, of Texas, and the Hon. Nicholas D. Coleman, of Madison parish, which were listened to with profound attention. After which a committee, composed of the following named gentlemen, was appointed by the President to take all necessary measures for the permanent organization of the Company, and to obtain from our citizens subscriptions to the capital stock. The chair appointed the following committee:: Messrs. S. O. Nelson, L. F. Generes, J. L. Macauley, Mason Pilcher, Addison Cammack, W. A. Violett, S. H. Kennedy, Saml. E. Moore, R. W. Rayne, C. M. Congreve, Robert Mott, M. J. Zunts, Clai??e Steele, B. J. Sage and L. H. Place.
This prompt action on the part of the corporation augurs well for the future success of the enterprise. It is one in which the city is much interested, for it will constitute the connecting link between the Opelousas road and the Empire State and Texas. Let the good work be pressed forward. It is of the utmost importance to this city and State, in a commercial point of view, and to the Confederate States it is a military necessity. We may allude at length to this enterprise hereafter.
