Col. W. C. Thompson |

The subject of this sketch, William C.
Thompson, was born February 6, 1839, now 72 years old ***** |
***** was captured by the Federals
December 17, 1864, as the Confederates retreated from Franklin, after
being repulsed at Nashville the 14th and 15th of December; and just here
we had a remarkable experience. A Mrs. Bough
{Cecelia Jetton Baugh}, a most excellent lady, who was caring for
me and others at her home one mile west of Franklin, lifted me in her
buggy to carry me to the train {on the Tennessee &
Alabama RR} in waiting to take our wounded to Columbia
{25 miles} to avoid capture. When near the
train we were confronted by a regiment of Confederate cavalry, guarding
the train which pulled out, leaving us to the tender mercies of the
Federals. ***** |
