Montgomery & West Point R. R. -- River
Defenses |
By reference to an article
copied from the Columbus Sun, it will be seen that the Directors of this
road have munificently contributed to the defenses of the Chattahoochee
river. |
Their example should be
imitated by every corporation which is benefitted by the trade of
Columbus, Florence, Eufaula, Fort Gaines, and the rich planting
districts along the Chattahoochee. |
Columbus being a cotton market, at which as much as one
hundred thousand bales have been received -- and as it is now one
vast workshop of the Government, it behooves every citizen or
corporation, for a wide distance around, to contribute liberally to
its defense. |
Capt. McCrady, who has been
appointed to locate and design the defenses, is an engineer of the first
ability; and we doubt not, if the proper timely aid is given, the sister
city of Montgomery will never fall into the hands of the enemy. If
Columbus falls, Montgomery, Macon and Atlanta will be in a deplorable
situation. |
