The Central Railroad |
On our first page will be found a copy of the Act
passed at the last session of the Legislature, to incorporate the
Central Railroad Company of South Carolina. It will be seen that the
capital stock of the Company is put down at fifty thousand shares, of
fifty dollars each. The books for receiving subscriptions are required
to be opened on the first Monday in April, by Commissioners appointed at
various points along the route, the Commissioners first giving thirty
days notice in four or more Gazettes in the State; the books to be kept
open at the several places indicated for ten days. If, at the time of
closing the books, the requisite number of shares shall not have been
subscribes, the Commissioners are authorized to receive further
subscriptions at any time within three years. |
The unfortunate political difficulties by which we are
now besieged, will of course, if not soon removed, operate a a serious
impediment to the speedy accomplishment of this cherished enterprise.
The idea, however, that these will defeat it, should not for a
moment be entertained. The dark clouds which hover over our political
horizon must sooner or later be dissipated, when the great interest felt
in the project a few months ago will spring up afresh in the minds of
the people. Next to the rescuing of our beloved country from the perils
which surround her, there is nothing which should more earnestly engage
the thoughts of the people of Lancaster than the speedy construction of
the South Carolina Central Railroad. |
