Seizure of Salt |
We learn from the Montgomery Advertiser
that on Friday last, Gov. Moore seized 1400 sacks of salt at the
Montgomery & West Point Depot, that were being transported from that
city to avoid the enforcements of the bill passed by the Alabama
Legislature against the exportation of this article. A much larger lot
was on the eve of being smuggled off but was prevented by the prompt
action of the Governor. The law passed by the Legislature authorized the
Governor to seize and hold, to be sold at fair prices, all salt now in
this State on consignment. |
Holders of the salt to be allowed the
privilege of appeal in case they are dissatisfied with the price given.
It also authorizes the Governor to forbid the shipment of large
quantities of salt from the State. Heavy penalties are affixed for
violation or attempted evasion of this law. |
