Texas & New Orleans Railroad |
The late report of the
President of the New Orleans, Opelousas & Great Western Railroad,
Mr. Wm. G. Hewes, gives a hopeful and encouraging account of its
condition and prospects. As is generally known some eighty or ninety
miles of this road, from New Orleans to Berwick's Bay, have been in
operation since April 1857; the Chief Engineer, Mr. Bayley, estimates
that 61 miles additional roadway will be ready for track-laying by the
1st of April, and 75 miles by the 1st of July. The extension of the
track to New Iberia -- 45 miles from Berwick Bay -- the point from
which the New Orleans & Texas road commences, is in steady
progress. The swamp work at Berwick, under contract with Mr. Knox,
nearly finished. The graduation of the whole
line (excepting 1 1/2 miles of swamp,) between Berwick and New Iberia, to be
finished in about two months. Nearly 20 miles of graduation has been
completed between New Iberia and Opelousas. The President says that
the resources of the company in bonds and lands are considered ample
for paying off their whole debt and for completing and equipping the
road to Houston Texas. Total length 238 miles. |
No time
is stated for the probable completion of the entire work. |
