Railroad Accident |
Houston, Feb. 24, 7:30 A. M. |
An accident on the Central
Road. The up train yesterday on the {Houston
& Texas} Central Road, after waiting sometime at Hockley,
the 35 mile station, for the down train which did not come, started
on. In crossing Clear Creek Bridge just below Hempstead some portion
of the bridge gave way, precipitating the locomotive and four freight
cars into the Valley below. One man, by name Charles Houston, a
fireman on the train, was killed. |
The engineer saved himself by leaping
into the Creek. We get this information from some workmen, who came
down on a hand car last evening. When they left, the down train had
not arrived, and it was feared that some serious accident was
detaining it. |
Houston, Feb. 21, 11 A. M. |
The down train on the Central
road has been heard from. No accident has happened to it. It was
detained by high water. The cause of the accident at Clear Creek
bridge was the washing of the earth from the abutments by a sudden
rise of the creek. The passenger trains will resume their regular
trips on Monday. |
