The Destruction of the Engines and Cars at
Martinsburg |
The destruction of the engines
and cars of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Company, at Martinsburg,
involves a loss to the company of not less than a half million of
dollars. Several of the engines destroyed were of William Mason & Co.'s
fine manufacture of Taunton, Mass., intended expressly for the passenger
trains over the western road. The majority of the engines were the
"camel backs," built by Ross Winans, Esq., at his extensive works in
Baltimore, and intended for heavy freight trains over the grades. Only
five passenger cars were destroyed; the others were horse, freight and
gondolas. Some of the engines can be repaired although at a heavy
expense. |
