Terrible Railroad Accident |
A train runoff, we are
informed, happened yesterday morning on the South Western Railroad three
miles this side of Fort Valley. The train was loaded with soldiers,
mostly Kentuckians from Hood's Army, that had just been exchanged and
were on their way to join their command. Two or three cars in the middle
of the train ran off a steep embankment ????? supposed from widening of
the tracks. |
By this accident, seven (?)
soldiers and one negro were killed and about thirty soldiers and four
women were wounded, some ????? deaths were caused by the cars falling
over upon the men who had jumped off. Names and regiments, we are unable
to attain. |
Assistant Surgeon J. E. H.
Ware of the District Hospital, from whom we have received the above
information, was on board the train and used his best endeavor to
relieve the wounded. A lady passenger aided greatly in caring for the
suffering. |
Five cars totally wrecked and
others badly damaged. The engine and six cars came on to ????? |

Since the above was in type, we have been
kindly furnished by Surgeon C. A. Rice of the 4th Mississippi who came
in on a train last night with the following casualties. |
