Tribute of Respect to the Late Col. Whiteside
|
We omitted at the proper time to publish the following
well written and well merited eulogy of Dr. Ramsey upon his late
colleague on the Board of Directors of the E. T. & Ga. Railroad:
|
Tribute of Respect
|
The following tribute was adopted by the Board of
Directors of the East Tennessee & Georgia Railroad at their late
meeting at Knoxville:
|
Dr. J. G. M. Ramsey, from the Committee to prepare
resolutions with regard to the death of James A. Whiteside, reported
the following, which were unanimously adopted:
|
The Committee heretofore appointed by the Board to offer
a tribute of its respect for the memory of a deceased member -- James
A. Whiteside, Esq., beg leave to report that our late colleague came
to our assistance from a profession illustrious in all time past for
its capacity for usefulness, for its public spirit and for its
devotion to the cause of popular rights and self-government; a
profession which in examples of not only leading public sentiment, but
of giving it direction in the channel of virtue, of patriotism, and of
loyalty, and not without numerous instances of heroic ??tion and
defense of right against usurpation and despotic power; a profession
which has often been the first to destroy a coming storm in the
political horizon to give notice of its first approach, and to guard
against and repel the threatened danger, the first to advise and
inaugurate revolution; a profession which in our own State, has
furnished to the cause of internal improvement its full proportion of
enlightened enterprise -- an enlarged liberality and unselfish effort
in the material improvement of Tennessee -- not lawyers merely, but
public spirited gentlemen; not citizens merely, but patriots,
political economists and public benefactors. Such was our departed
friend and colleague, Colonel Whiteside. Since his election as one of
our Directors, we have known him as one of our most active, and useful
members -- distinguished for his wisdom in council, for his
moderation, and his great good common sense. One of his late public
services was a hasty trip to the seat of the Confederate Government,
on business connected with one of our Railroads, immediately after the
glorious victory at Manassas Plains, and the writer, on that occasion,
enjoyed with him the lofty and legitimate gratification that the East
Tennessee & Georgia Railroad had some instrumentality in
transporting the patriotic soldiery of Tennessee to the scene of that
brilliant achievement. The seeds of disease were then plainly marked
upon his features. He returned home and soon after died. Therefore,
|
Resolved. That in the death of Col. Whiteside this
Board has lost a valuable and useful member, and the cause of internal
improvements in Tennessee one of its earliest, most enlightened and
zealous advocates.
|
Resolved. That the Secretary be charged with the
duty of forwarding to the family of the late Col. Whiteside a copy of
these proceedings and that he furnish the same to the newspapers for
publication.
