This morning's down passenger
train ran off at Ruff's Station {Western &
Atlantic RR}, six miles below Marietta, killing Capt. Thos. J.
Scott, Co. E, 8th Kentucky Regiment, and dangerously wounding Lieut.
Bird, Co. A, 51st Tennessee. These officers were attached to General
Pillow's Bureau of Conscription, and had just received orders and were
en route for their posts in Mississippi. We understand them to have been
officers of merit. The cars were occupied by wounded soldiers, and Capt.
Scott was forced to occupy a platform, and was crushed between two cars.
No other casualties. The accident occurred from the displacement of a
switch. It caused delay in the arrival of the up trains till about 10
o'clock this morning. |
