Destruction of Railroad Property |
The number of locomotives
destroyed on the line of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad west of
Harper's Ferry, by order of Gen. Johnston, a few days ago, was forty
six, and of cars of various kinds three hundred and five.
By this act of Gen. Johnston, in command of the Confederate troops,
the railroad company is estimated to have suffered a loss of from
$450,000 to $500,000. Many of the bridges of the company had been
previously burnt or blown up, to replace which will also required a
large outlay of money. Commenting upon these acts the Baltimore
American says: |
"It would be difficult to
find, in the whole history of modern warfare, another instance of more
unjustified and needless vandalism; and if any thing was wanting
beside this to make Maryland turn away from the threatened embrace of secession
with anger and disgust, surely it could be found in this wanton and
criminal destruction of property, in the shape of the most labored and
valuable works of public utility." |
