The intelligence from Harper's
Ferry and other points confirms the fact that the rebel forces have
abandoned the whole line of the upper Potomac. Harper's Ferry, as
described by those who have gone there since the evacuation, is a
demolished town. The destruction of every thing is very great.
Leesburg was also abandoned by the rebel troops on Saturday, who made
a hasty retreat, after burning all the cars, locomotives, depot,
&c. The U. S. troops soon returned and took possession of the
town. The 14,000 rebels who were at the Ferry, marched off in two
columns, to join Generals Beauregard and Lee's forces. |
On Sunday, the First Division
of the army, under Gen. Canwallader, crossed the Potomac into
Virginia. The troops waded gallantly through the stream with the water
up to the waist, and soon established themselves across the river,
their advance being covered by two pieces of cannon of the battery of
the Rhode Island Regiment. They pushed on to Martinsburg, which they
found deserted by the rebels, who had burned the {Baltimore
& Ohio} railroad buildings and the repair shops, and
damaged a large number of Locomotives. All the bridges on the road
from Harper's Ferry to Hancock, are either wholly or partially
destroyed. |
