The Whistle of the Locomotive |
The Atlanta Intelligencer, of
the 5th, takes great pleasure in announcing to the public that on
Friday last, about one o'clock in the afternoon, the shrill whistle of
the steam engine announced the first arrival of a train of cars within
the corporate limits of Atlanta, since its abandonment by the enemy.
To Major J. M. Hottel's indomitable energy, the connection now made by
the Atlanta & West Point railroad with the "Gate City,"
is done. "The honor," says the Intelligencer, "of
making this first connection with it, belongs to that road. Our
readers abroad can hardly realize the feeling which the whistle of the
engine inspired in our citizens. Upon hearing it, men, women, and
boys, shouted with joy. The old, familiar and inspiring sound was
grateful to us all. Soon the other railroads will form their
connection with our city, and the, from her ashes, Phoenix-like,
Atlanta will rise to resume her former importance in Georgia and the
South, never again, we trust, to be wrested from her by our savage
foes." |
