Fatal Occurrence on the Mississippi &
Tennessee Railroad |
Two Men Instantly Killed By The Explosion
Of A Locomotive |
We learn that yesterday
morning on the Mississippi & Tennessee railroad at Love's station,
eighteen miles from this city, the locomotive D. S. White exploded,
instantly killing the engineer, Mr. Dougharty, and a fireman named
Downes. The locomotive was attached to a freight train and was
detached and switched off to enable it to visit a watertank. It is supposed
that the tender was empty, and the sudden introduction to the boiler
of cold water produced the explosion. The scene is represented as
having been terrible to witness. The locomotive was shivered to
pieces, while Dougharty and Downes, together with the fragments of the
car, were thrown a great distance. |
