Railroad Accident |
Yesterday morning an extra
train started down the Mississippi & Tennessee railroad from the
depot at this place having a spare engine in tow. Its conductor was
warned to look out for a construction train, which had been making
repairs to the road, and which was then on the way up in accordance
with orders. The down train neglected to "flag" rounding a
curve half a mile below Nonconah bridge and four and a half miles
below the city. At this spot it was moving between fifteen and twenty
miles an hour and here it came in collision with the construction
train moving at the rate of 1 1/2 miles an hour. The stack went
forward. The engines were all thrown from the track, but the three
which ran into each other ????? running into one mass. The tenders and
cars were completely smashed. The engineers and others cheated death
by jumping, but a negro received ????? and a wound to his hand. On the
intelligence becoming known here an engine was dispatched to the scene
of disaster, when another catastrophe came near ??? place. The cow
catcher of the engine, by some means slipped down and caught a heavy
??? and was thrown from the track, fortunately without severe damage.
Another engine was sent down and with much labor the first engine was
again got on the track. The train for Grenada was detained last night,
owing to the necessity of clearing up the wreck. An investigation will
be made of the matter today. |
