The Accident at the Chunkey |
We had the pleasure this
morning of meeting Captain H. M. Walsh, who had charge of the bodies
and effects of the victims of the late disaster at Chunkey bridge, on
the Southern {(of Mississippi)} railroad.
The wreck is a ??? in the water -- the engines being submerged about
twenty-two feet, the river having risen since the accident. Capt.
W. assures us that the statement published in the Mississippian,
over the signature of D. H. H., as to the circumstances preceding the
accident, as stated to him personally by Mr. Temple, the section
master. The following is a list of the bodies taken out since our last
notice of the affair: Wm. Clarke, company E, and S. Hl Mender, and
Isaac C. Martin, company K, 35th Mississippi; John Hile, a soldier,
and Cap. Gentry, of East Tennessee. |
